I compiled the top five cocktail recipes of 2017 based on search interest. None of the entries are shocking — many are classics — although #3 is a seasonal favorite, which was a pleasant surprise. All five are tasty and worth trying at home.
I usually publish an annual “top five” roundup in the spring, so this is a little late — but still fun.

The Hot Toddy
The Hot Toddy is a warm, comforting cocktail often associated with cold weather or a soothing remedy when you feel under the weather. Made with hot water, whiskey (or another spirit), honey, and citrus, it’s soothing and aromatic. You don’t have to be sick to enjoy one — it’s simply a cozy, seasonal favorite.

There are many variations — for example, a ruby red grapefruit mojito swaps grapefruit vodka and juice for rum and lime, and adds ginger syrup for a spicy note. The number-one cocktail for 2017 is the Margarita. To celebrate, I’m highlighting the Cadillac Margarita — my most popular margarita recipe. Traditionally, the Cadillac Margarita is a premium version of the classic margarita, often built with quality tequila, fresh lime juice, and an orange liqueur such as Grand Marnier for a richer finish.
The margarita’s enduring popularity is no surprise: it’s bright, satisfying, and versatile. The Cadillac version elevates the drink with higher-end ingredients and a smooth, luxurious flavor. It’s a favorite at gatherings and always a crowd-pleaser.
Here’s a straightforward Margarita on the Rocks recipe that uses premium ingredients but omits the extra orange liqueur if you prefer a simpler version.

Margarita on the Rocks
Ingredients
- 2 ounces Patron Silver tequila (or any other tequila)
- 1 ounce Cointreau (or triple sec)
- 2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 ounce simple syrup (adjust 1/2 to 1 ounce to taste)
Garnish
- lime wheel (cut a slit so it sits on the glass)
- salt for rim (optional)
Instructions
- If desired, wet the rim of the glass with simple syrup and dip it in salt.
- Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
- Add tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and simple syrup.
- Cap the shaker and shake for 30 seconds.
- Strain into the prepared glass, avoiding the salted rim if used.
- Sip, smile, and enjoy.
