You Are Loved and Enough: Stop Feeling Like You Have to Prove Yourself

God's Love

When I served as a Young Life College leader at the University of Michigan, I learned a great deal from my staff leader, Tucker. He cared deeply for us and offered encouragement especially when school or personal challenges felt overwhelming. In those seasons he often turned to Matthew 3:16–17, the passage that follows Jesus’ baptism.

It reads: “16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’”

What struck Tucker about this moment was that God declares His love and approval of Jesus before Jesus has undertaken public ministry, performed miracles, or accomplished His ultimate purpose. At that point Jesus had not yet preached, healed, or sacrificed—yet God was already well pleased with Him.

Tucker believed this truth applies to each of us. While we are not the Son in the unique sense Jesus is, we are children of God. God’s love and pleasure toward us do not depend on our achievements or performance. He loves us for who we are—His sons and daughters—before we do anything to earn it.

To drive this home, Tucker would often close our conversations with the words: “You are loved. You are enough. You don’t have to prove anything.” Can you hear those words? Can you let them sink in? The God who created the universe loves you. You are enough in His eyes, despite mistakes and failures. You don’t need to prove your worth to God—He accepts you as you are.

Whenever feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, or the pressure to perform creep in, repeat this simple affirmation:

I am loved. I am enough. I don’t have to prove anything.

Speak it aloud or quietly to yourself until you believe it. These truths brought me comfort and peace in difficult seasons, and I pray they will encourage you too.
