Local Beauty

The northwest region of the Big Island is called the Kohala (pronounced Ko-HA-la) coast, where Hale Ahonui is located. The Kohala Coast showcases a wide cross-section of what makes Hawaii special. The southern portion features world-class beaches, resorts, and golf courses. To the north, charming small towns like Hāwī (Ha-VEE) and Kapaʻau (Kapa-OW) preserve the quieter, timeless side of island life.

Situated between the wind-swept slopes of Kohala Mountain to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Hale Ahonui sits on grassy meadows that recall the Flint Hills of Kansas. The area offers dramatic panoramas and many unique activities found on the Big Island.

Local Abundance

The Kohala region’s rolling pastures and varied climate support livestock and agriculture; the Big Island supplies much of Hawaii’s beef. In recent years, there’s been a stronger emphasis on locally grown food, with year-round growing conditions, abundant ocean harvests, and wide pastures all contributing to that shift. A significant portion of the island’s cattle are now sold for local consumption.

This coast is a food lover’s paradise. Fresh local fish like mahi mahi, ahi, and opakapaka arrive regularly at Kawaihae (Ka-WHY-hi) harbor. Local fruits range from the rare white pineapple to dragon fruit, guava, and passion fruit. Macadamia-fed wild pork from nearby Parker Ranch is another regional specialty. In upcoming posts I’ll share recipes that capture this bounty so you can recreate island flavors at home.

The Kohala Coast elevation varies widely, from about 120 feet above sea level along the Akoni Pule Highway to roughly 5,400 feet at the summit of Kohala Mountain. That range creates diverse climates and landscapes. Panoramic ocean views to the west and sightlines to Hualalai, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Kohala Mountain make for truly magical vistas.

Hale Ahonui

Hale Ahonui occupies a three-acre lot at about 1,000 feet elevation, where the average temperature is near 73°F. Daytime highs typically reach the low 80s, and evenings cool into the mid-60s. We chose this elevation for the comfortable temperatures and the sweeping views.

My first introduction to Kohala came years ago while searching for vacation destinations. A photo of this landscape captured my imagination and I booked a trip. On that visit we discovered this parcel through a local realtor and purchased it soon after.
