Behind the Curtain: Inside a Classic Peep Show Experience

I bought a box of those pastel marshmallow chicks with the idea of using them on Easter cupcakes. They were adorable in that sugary, fluffy way that Peeps are.

They even looked cuter on sticks. I couldn’t resist turning a few into lollipops.

Then I noticed my edible ink pens on the counter and got a different idea—something less Easter-themed and a lot more playful.

I grabbed red and black pens, flipped the Peeps onto their tummy, and went to work. I also pinched their ears to shape them. Don’t laugh—I was bored and having fun.

Peeps + pens =

Pikachus—Peep-achus, if you will.

I’m not sure I’ll ever see Peeps the same way again.

For the record, Pikachu is part of the Pokémon franchise owned by Nintendo. I don’t know every character, but Pikachu was on my mind because I’d just bought some Pokémon toys for my friend’s daughter, who’s been collecting them for a while.

There are hundreds of strange, lovable creatures in the Pokémon world, and Pikachu is one of the most recognizable—perfect for a Peep makeover. I couldn’t wait to surprise my friend’s daughter with them.

She squealed when she saw them, and her little brother loved them, too. Their smiles made it all worth it.

Speaking of Nintendo, have any of you played the Nintendo DS? My niece got one for Christmas along with Super Mario Bros., and I’ve become a little hooked. When she comes over I always ask, “Sweetie, do you want to bring your Nintendo?” and “Don’t forget the charger.” Then we sit on the couch and take turns—she usually gets ten turns to my one. When I do get a turn, I often fail immediately, and she kindly demonstrates the right way by taking the console and showing me what I did wrong. I probably should buy one, but I’m afraid I’d never get anything else done until I finished World 8. It’s too much fun to play together—or to watch her play.

Because I enjoy it so much, I decided to give away a Nintendo DSi. It was released today and has music and photo capabilities, along with a bigger screen—basically, it’s awesome.

Holy Peeps! I was blown away by the number of entries for this giveaway. I wish I had more DSi consoles to give away, but I only had one bright blue unit for one lucky winner. And the winner is…

Congrats, Cindy. Your wish is my command.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your favorite Easter treats. By the way—what’s up with stale Peeps? I’m out of the loop on that one; I’ll have to try them for myself.

And for the Pokémon-curious: the Pokémons my friend’s daughter listed are Mewtwo, Shieldon, Glameow, Mew, and Lucario. Thanks to everyone who helped clear that up for me.
