Easy Instant Pot Quinoa

Quinoa is technically a seed, though it’s often treated like a grain. It has a pleasant nutty flavor and is a nutritious option for bowls, sides, and meal prep. Instant Pot quinoa is quick to make and very adaptable to different recipes.

What makes quinoa a superfood?

  • Quinoa is rich in protein and is considered a complete protein because it contains all nine essential amino acids.
  • It provides dietary fiber, B vitamins, and minerals in higher amounts than many common grains. Quinoa is also naturally gluten-free.

Can I freeze cooked quinoa?

Yes. Cooked quinoa freezes well: portion it into serving sizes, store in airtight containers, and freeze for up to three months.

Why rinse quinoa before cooking?

  • Some quinoa has a bitter or soapy taste if not rinsed.
  • The outer layer contains saponin, a naturally occurring coating that repels pests and tastes bitter.
  • Rinsing quinoa thoroughly in a fine mesh strainer removes saponin and improves flavor.
  • Check the package—some brands come pre-rinsed—but rinsing yourself ensures the best taste.

What can I make with Instant Pot quinoa?

Quinoa is delicious on its own as a side—try stirring in butter, fresh herbs, or steamed vegetables. It also makes a hearty base for bowls: add roasted or raw veggies, beans, meat, nuts, seeds, and your favorite dressing to create satisfying meals. Quinoa works well in warm bowls, salads, and grain-free swaps for rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Quinoa, rinsed
  • 1 ¼ cup Low sodium chicken broth (or water)
  • tsp Salt

Instructions

  • Using a fine mesh strainer, rinse the quinoa very well to remove any bitter saponin.
  • Add the rinsed quinoa, broth or water, and salt to the Instant Pot insert.
  • Close the lid and set the steam release knob to Sealing.
  • Select Pressure Cook/Manual on High and set the timer to 1 minute. The pot will take a few minutes to come to pressure.
  • When the cycle finishes, turn off the pot and let it sit undisturbed for 15 minutes (natural release).
  • After 15 minutes, move the steam release to Venting to release any remaining pressure, then open the lid when it is safe.
  • Fluff the quinoa with a fork and serve, or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
