I compiled the top five cocktail recipes of 2017 based on search interest. None of the entries are shocking — many are classics — although #3 is a seasonal favorite, which was a pleasant surprise. All five are tasty and worth trying at home.

I usually publish an annual “top five” roundup in the spring, so this is a little late — but still fun.

On to the top five 2017 cocktail recipes

#5

Whiskey Sour

The Whiskey Sour is a deserved classic. My mother loved this cocktail, and when I wrote about it before I called it the “wicked good whiskey sour” — a nod to my Massachusetts roots. Simple, balanced and timeless, the Whiskey Sour combines whiskey, lemon, and a touch of sweetness for a bright, approachable drink.

Sangria

Sangria is fruity, colorful, and endlessly adaptable. It’s an ideal poolside or party drink because it can be prepared in a pitcher and looks beautiful. The classic red wine sangria is bold and full-bodied, while white sangrias are lighter and bright. Both styles are crowd-pleasers depending on the season and occasion.

#3

The Hot Toddy

The Hot Toddy is a warm, comforting cocktail often associated with cold weather or a soothing remedy when you feel under the weather. Made with hot water, whiskey (or another spirit), honey, and citrus, it’s soothing and aromatic. You don’t have to be sick to enjoy one — it’s simply a cozy, seasonal favorite.

#2

The Mojito

The Mojito is refreshingly bright and surprisingly easy to make. Classic mojitos use white rum, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, mint, and soda water for a crisp, clean profile. There are many variations — for example, a ruby red grapefruit mojito swaps grapefruit vodka and juice for rum and lime, and adds ginger syrup for a spicy note. Both versions are refreshing and perfect for warm weather.

Whether classic or inventive, the Mojito remains a top choice for its balance of sweet, sour, and herbal freshness.

Cadillac Margarita

The number-one cocktail for 2017 is the Margarita. To celebrate, I’m highlighting the Cadillac Margarita — my most popular margarita recipe. Traditionally, the Cadillac Margarita is a premium version of the classic margarita, often built with quality tequila, fresh lime juice, and an orange liqueur such as Grand Marnier for a richer finish.

The margarita’s enduring popularity is no surprise: it’s bright, satisfying, and versatile. The Cadillac version elevates the drink with higher-end ingredients and a smooth, luxurious flavor. It’s a favorite at gatherings and always a crowd-pleaser.

Here’s a straightforward Margarita on the Rocks recipe that uses premium ingredients but omits the extra orange liqueur if you prefer a simpler version.
